The Beauty of Natural Body Products

Have you ever wondered how the beauty products lining your medicine cabinet and bathroom counter could have an impact on the environment? Everything from the packaging, manufacturing process and waste created during and after the production of these products can cause a lot of environmental damage.

Not only that, but there are also a lot of chemicals used in our everyday skincare and beauty products that have been found to be bad for our personal health as well.  Some common synthetic ingredients found in beauty products include parabens, dioxins and phenols; all of which have cancer-causing properties that pose a danger to your health, as well as the health of our wildlife and marine life when exposed to their natural habitats.

Do you really want these harmful ingredients being absorbed by your skin – the largest organ of your body – and have the potential to harm your well-being?

On the flip-side, avoiding these harmful ingredients has been shown to improve the wellness of your skin with a reduction in redness, irritation or breakouts, and wrinkles. There are an incredible amount of natural products that you could purchase as a conscious consumer, or even make at home using ingredients from your kitchen!

Looking at my personal experience with natural products, I'd say there are many reasons why I would go au naturel every time.

Below are my top five reasons to switch to natural products:

  1. Eco-friendly: natural products are not only good for the skin, but they are also good for the planet. No destructive nano-particles will be washing down my drain and hurting the fishies!
  2. Less irritation: products are less likely to cause any skin irritation due to the absence of harmful chemicals, artificial colors and other unnatural ingredients.
  3. Natural fragrance: traditional products are loaded with unnatural fragrances, which typically contain a dozen or more hazardous synthetic chemicals, some of which are derived from petroleum. Natural products are normally scented with oils, which are pleasant and less overpowering.
  4. Overall effectiveness: natural and organic skin remedies have been used for centuries, with synthetic ingredients such as parabens only being introduced to our products as early as the 1950's.
  5. Less plastic: traditional beauty products such as lotions, shampoos and hair spray all contain plastics, resins, waxes, and silicones – coating your skin and hair over and over again with layers of plastic. Yuck!

So why not do yourself and the planet a favor, and switch to a natural skin and body care routine? Just remember to use up all of the items that you already have stocked, unless you can give it away to a friend or family member who you know will use it.

Something that I have learned on this green lifestyle journey is to not buy anything until and unless I absolutely need it.

As always, remember to start slowly with one item at a time. When I started the switch to natural products, I began with switching to an aluminum-free deodorant I found at Walgreens on a quick run to the store. Since then, I have used three different types of aluminum-free deodorants, including a hand-made one in sustainable packaging created by a local herbalist.

It will take time for you to discover your favorite natural products, so please be patient! If you find yourself struggling with finding new products that work for you and your particular body chemistry, and wanting to just give up, it helps to recall why you wanted to make the switch in the first place.

Do it for you. Do it for the planet. Do it for our future.

Love & Light,
Adriana
